Gwent Police to Consult on Police Station Changes.

At a meeting with Gwent Labour MPs, the Chief Constable of Gwent Police, Carmel Napier, indicated that there would now be ‘consultation’ with local people and the Police Authority about the closure of public counters in Gwent police stations.

The statement by the Chief Constable marks a change in Gwent Police’s position compared with the start of the week.

After the meeting, Caerphilly Labour MP Wayne David said,"I am pleased that the Chief Constable is now prepared to listen to representations from the Police Authority and elected representatives, and most importantly of all, from members of the public.  I look forward to receiving details of how this consultation will be conducted.  Nobody doubts that Gwent Police are in a difficult position because of central government cuts but people’s views have to be taken into account before final decisions are taken.  I am glad that Gwent Police now accept this."
